New HIV/AIDS Cases Occur Due To Unprotected Sex Rather Than Injecting Drugs: Lee

HIV-AIDSThe Head of infectious disease unit at Hospital Sungai Buloh, Selangor, Dr. Christopher Lee, has said that the image of HIV and AIDS is very different today than it is in the 80's and early 90's. He said that earlier, the main reason behind HIV/AIDS infection was injection of drugs through non-sterilized needles but now it is unprotected or risky sexual behaviors.

The figures revealed by the Health Ministry have shown that there is a decrease in the number of new infections in men for the past decade. The rate of new infections among women is slow but is still rising.

The figures have also shown that the percentage of new infections due to sexual transmission is 48.5% whereas due to injecting drug use it was 47.6%. Dr. Lee said that the figures have shown that there is a need to raise awareness among people about the risk factors related to HIV/AIDS.

He said that the Hospital Sungai Buloh celebrated hospital's International AIDS Memorial Day in May. About 300 healthcare workers and people from NGOs attended the event and shared various examples information, treatment and support which can help the community to prevent HIV/ AIDS infection.
