Lately, authorities were handling Hendra virus cases in southeast Queensland. The authorities quarantined a number of properties and tested related people for possible contamination. But this death is the first case in north Queensland.
The horse was reported sick on Sunday and consequently visited by a private vet who took the samples for tests. The horse died next morning, before the reports came in. The horse was owned, along with thirty seven other horses by Michael Trout, Liberal National Party candidate for Barron River. The property is in process of being quarantined.
Queensland Health, key horse industry groups and the Australian Veterinary Association have been notified of this latest case.
Until now, eight horses have died in total because of infection from Hendra virus in Queensland since June 20.
The case is believed to be unrelated to those in Queensland's southeast.
