New Zealand to Put Health Warning on Liquor Bottles

lionA group called ‘DrinkWise Australia’ would soon be putting health warning label on the bottles of liquor. The group is funded by the Australian alcohol industry. It has come to light that it will be putting health warning labels on 80% of alcohol products including beer, wine and spirits.

New Zealand will also be seen following Australia as Brewer Lion Nathan has announced that within six weeks health warning will also be put on the alcohols in the country. The warning imposed by the Australian alcohol industry reads, “It is safest not to drink while pregnant” and “is your drinking harming yourself or others”?

Although, New Zealand has geared to put warnings, there are many who think that alone labeling won’t help in reducing the harmful effect of alcohol on people’s life. People are of the opinion that together with labeling educational programs should also be made available so that people could be made aware about the harmful effect of the drinking.

Alcohol Healthwatch, Director Rebecca Williams said that Consumers need to have access to consistent, accurate and understandable information about the risks of consuming alcohol. Rebecca said that miniature labeling over the bottles of alcohol can’t serve the purpose of empowering masses about its harmful effect.
