Irish Population Indulged In Unsafe Drinking Habits, Claims HRB

Health-Research-BoardThe Irish people do not follow the healthy drinking habits and drink in a harmful way, claimed a few researchers. Alcohol related deaths have increased with the passage of time and the target is the younger group.

Health Research Board’s (HRB), Senior Researcher, Dr. Suzi Lyons stated that around half of the Irish population has been indulged in unsafe drinking habits.

She said, "The per capita consumption of alcohol in Ireland is among the highest in Europe and the majority of Irish people drink in a harmful manner".

According to the HRB report, the death count has increased due to alcoholic consumption. The figures revealed that between 2004 and 2008, one in four persons among 3,336 people have died due to liver damage.

The report notified that 672 died due to alcohol venom and out of this number, three-quarters were men. The most affected area due to heavy alcohol consumption is liver, whereas Cardiac problems have been accounted in 17% people, respiratory problems in 11% people and cancer condition in 9% people.

Also, 36.8% of the young population between the age group 24 and 35, has been more vulnerable to liver disease and around 10% of elderly people around 75 years of age have been affected by liver disease, due to the alcohol consumption.
