Sony’s ultra-portable VAIO Z series: at a glance

 at a glanceSony's super-slim VAIO Z laptop, rival to Apple’s MacBook Air, have finally been made available for purchase.

Touted as the "world's lightest 13-inch standard voltage PC", the VAIO Z measures merely 0.66-inches in thickness and weighs only 2.5-pounds, which allows it to boast of a thinner profile even than the Apple MacBook Air.

Boasting a thinner profile even than the Apple MacBook Air at just 0.66 inches in thickness, the aluminum-&-carbon-fiber laptop comes equipped with some very impressive hardware specs.

The 13.1-inch ultra-portable laptop features LCD display that offers a resolution of 1600 by 900 pixels, 3 USB ports, VGA ports, HDMI, SSD of up to 512GB and RAM of up to 8GB. Customers can choose form a choice of two chips, viz. the second-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors.

The series, which runs Windows 7 operating system, also comes with an extra battery that doubles the 8-hour battery life of the device.

An external device, called the Power Media Dock, connects to the VAIO using Light Peak technology (Thunderbolt). In addition, it features an AMD Radeon HD graphics card and an optical drive.

The VIAO Z, equipped with the Intel Core i5-2410M processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD, has been priced at $1,969.99. Depending on upgrades, the price tag for the ultra-portable device can easily run you over $3,000.
