Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) had found a horse two weeks ago, in a miserable condition, wandering on small piece of land near Balbeggie Avenue, in Thornton. The SPCA authorities had tried to find the information about the owner of the horse or about the person who left the horse in such a painful condition.
Unfortunately, Steven Gray, Senior Inspector, SPCA, could not find any detailed information about the owner of the horse or who was responsible for the Horse’s dreadful condition. The horse was found to be suffering from the pain due to overgrown hooves.
As per Veterinary surgeon Hugh Somerville of Loch Leven Equine Practice, “Overgrown hooves happen when they are not trimmed often enough. ‘This pony had a condition called laminitis, which is when the hooves curl up. In human terms, it’s a bit like smashing your thumb with a hammer, and then doing press ups on it, putting all of your body weight through the nails”. The vets believed that the horse would not be able to survive for much days, therefore, was decided to be killed so as to relief the horse from further pain.
