No More Tobacco-Related Display Names in Dunedin: Tobacco Laws

Tobacco LawsA retailer from Dunedin will have to lose "tobacconist" as his store name after the passing of Smokefree Environment Amendment Bill in Parliament.

According to a spokesman from the Ministry of Health, the law will prohibit retailers from using any word related to the tobacco products, as the word may indicate the availability of the products for purchase.

Southern District Health Board Public Health General Manager Pip Stewart stated that the board was contented by the new law of restricting display names. In February, the board had asked for a control on the display of tobacco-related names. It has also submitted pictures of five Dunedin businesses that carry the smoke-related names.

Selwyn Grave Men's Hairdresser and Tobacconist will no more be using the word "tobacconist" as his shops name.

Mr. Grave stated that as a registered hairdresser and tobacconist he should be allowed to use the related words as his shops name. He did not want to change the name now, after using it for so long.

This step of government may be a setback for the advertisement of the business for the outsiders but the local residents will always be aware of it.

Melbourne Discount Cigarettes and Tobacco Dairy manager Jack Yu said that changing the name would result in spending "couple of thousand dollars".
