According to reports, though the palms shopping center is faced with the challenge brought about by the adverse effects of the earthquakes, which involved, the Government's zoning announcements, regarding homes brought down in the eastern suburbs, it’s still going to be re-opened on the 8th of September. Also, some shops in the center are set to open later.
The Centre Manager, Keryn Ward, stated: ”On June 13 further damage had been done to the centre and that more remedial work had been required, including re-checking the car park and the centre columns, flooring and plastering repairs and re-fixing the damaged guttering between buildings”.
However, the major work which involves the addition of carbon-fibre wraps to back 400 columns in the center began after the 22nd of February earthquake, and has been holding on well. Hence, the owner of Palms, Australia's AMP Capital Shopping Centre Fund, is reported not to have ‘re-assessed’ the value of the centre in the midst of the earthquakes and will do that after trading resumed.
Moreover, Keryn stated, “A shortage of supermarkets and petrol stations in the eastern suburbs meant the highly anticipated reopening of a supermarket in the mall would be welcomed”.
