16 people arrested in connection with Anonymous attacks on PayPal

FBI on Tuesday arrested 14 people in the US in connection with hacking attacks launched by hacking group Anonymous against online payment service PayPal.

The arrests were made in Arizona, Alabama, Colorado, California, the District of Columbia, New Mexico, Ohio, Florida and some other places in the US.

According to the US Department of Justice, one person has been arrested in South London and other four people in the Netherlands for allegedly being a part of the Anonymous.

FBI agents seized computers and other equipment at various addresses in New York, and agents also executed search warrants in New York City and Long Island. However, they didn’t arrest anybody there.

A New York FBI spokesperson confirmed execution of search warrants, saying, "These search warrants are being executed in connection with an ongoing FBI investigation."

PayPal computers were attacked in December last year to protest the online payment service decision to suspend the accounts of WikiLeaks.

Anonymous also claimed responsibility for breaching the cyber security of credit card companies Visa and MasterCard last year when the companies declined to process donations to whistle-blower site WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange.
