Conservative Looking to Label Alcohol to Encourage "Responsible" Drinking

beerUnder new Conservative plans to effectively ensure that drinking is curbed, labels on each bottle of beer, wine or spirit sold across UK would strongly hint at a "socially responsible" level of consumption of alcohol, in addition to clearly detailing the level of alcohol in each drink.

The party has stressed that the currently used term "units of alcohol" is unclear and confusing and would be done away with in favor of labels displaying the centi-liters of "pure alcohol" in a drink, the Tories emerge as winners in the next election.

Andrew Lansley, the Shadow Health Secretary, while reveling the Tories' public health agenda, stressed that "harnessing the power of social norms" in order to try and combat the problems of obesity, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse and bingeing, is the best measure.

He asserted that the new labels would help people make informed decisions by comparing their drinking habits with the rest of the general population.

Campaigners, however, have warned that scraping units would be a mistake as the measures have been used for a very long time and are equivalent. 1 centi-liter means 10 mili-liters of alcohol.
