FDA Approves Brilinta

FDA Approves BrilintaOn Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Brilinta. Brilinta has been discovered by AstraZeneca. Brilinta is a new blood thinner and it would be competing with Plavix, which is the second best-selling drug in the world.

The company’s brand development leader, Dr. Alex Gold said: “It is good news for patients, and it’s a good result for AstraZeneca as well. We think the label has been a good outcome and will enable physicians to use the drug appropriately”.

It was reported that the agency would require a warning about how the drug’s effectiveness would be reduced, if it were consumed with higher doses of aspirin. The company has revealed that Brilinta is more effective than Plavix, in reducing heart attacks and deaths from cardiovascular causes.

The FDA has reported that the United States market is now open for Brilinta, as FDA has approved it for the patients. Brilinta is already approved in 38 other countries.

In December, F. D. A. rejected Brilinta because the results of the studies were not very clear. The scientific advisory panel has voted for the use of the drug July 2010 but FDA rejected it.

Analyst for Bernstein Research, Timothy Anderson has reported that the new drug, Brilinta should not be suggested by the doctors, because of the aspirin warning. He added that doctors should only suggest Plavix.
