On one hand, the state’s power company Mighty River Power improved its electric production by 27% but the sales of electricity decreased due to the earthquake in the region of Christchurch.
The total production comprised 1,785GWh from April to June, which used to be 401GWh in the same period previous year. Hydro generation jumped 58% to 1,190GWh, due to increase in the water level in Lake Taupo and the Waikato River, which were earlier suffering from drought conditions. The Geothermal output climbed to 562GWh from 552GWh.
A 5% decline in the residential and commercial customers which comes to 392,000 from 412,000 was recorded, that is a decrease in 1,710GWh electricity consumption. Decrease in the prices of electricity meant a decrease in the prices of coal and gas by 65% to 33GWh, which resulted in Mighty Rover's carbon emissions to decrease by 22%. The SOE said earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization and fair value changes in financial instruments for the year ended June 30 were $435 million to $450 million.
The production unit of Mighty River was much stronger with excess of geothermal and hydro productivity. The company claimed that 98% of its power came from renewable sources, helping drive carbon emissions down by 22%, compared with the same period in 2010.
