1.6 Million Britons Suffer From Anorexia: Survey

AnorexiaThe National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence suggest that approximately 1.6 million people across the United Kingdom are suffering from an eating disorder. Additionally, a recent survey conducted by an eating disorder charity, Beat, revealed that roughly nine out of 10 anorexia sufferers notified that their GP did not know how to fix their problem.

To address the serious issue that can trigger life threatening health problems, authorities have drafted some strategies that would help the GPs to efficiently diagnose eating disorders including anorexia and bulimia. The Wiltshire Community Eating Disorder Service is also enthusiastic to offer its inpatient and day care services.

A clinical psychologist at the new unit, Nicola Spiller, said that the problem needs a serious consideration as in some situations the eating disorders have sometimes been the Cinderella specialty of mental health.

"I think they are very challenging to work with and sometimes it hasn't been clear what treatment works. One of the things we're hoping that the Eating Disorders Community Service can do is increase awareness with GPs and help them to develop a better understanding of the disorder and also give them training on how to work with people within their surgeries”, added Nicola Spiller.
