UK supermarket chain Tesco is preparing to offer free Wi-Fi in its stores to allow shopper read product reviews and compare prices on their mobile devices while shopping.
Tesco’s chief information officer Mike McNamara said that the new service is currently being trialed in four stores, and will soon be expanded to others.
McNamara added that customers were already making use of mobile devices for reading product reviews and comparing prices, and the company wanted to help them.
Speaking on the topic, he said, “My guess is it will go in all stores. You can stand Canute-like and pretend nothing is happening... or you can say its happening and I am going to help it happen.”
Tesco’s new chief executive officer Philip Clarke hopes that free Wi-Fi service for customers will help the chain expand further.
Tesco has more than 2,700 stores across the country, and the move to offer free Wi-Fi will provide a considerable boost to the free Wi-Fi coverage nationwide.
Chains like McDonalds and Starbucks are already offering free Wi-Fi coverage inside their stores.
