In a popular and top-ranked industry publication, Air New Zealand has been named as Airline of the Year, news which has led the company to offer its staff of 11,000 an extra day off as an award.
Air Transport World has said that Air New Zealand was being awarded the laurel for its commitment to safety and operational performance and top-notch customer service that also combined traveler-friendly IT systems and a caring crew.
The judges also congratulated the airline for the way in which it had managed to "weathered one of the worst downturns in aviation history and its leadership role in the industry".
"It's about our employees but also everyone else connected with Air New Zealand so let's give everyone a day to spend with their families. That's a humble way that we can give something to our people without big noting", said Air New Zealand Chief Executive Rob Fyfe.
Air New Zealand has been congratulated by both the Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism John Key.
