Grandmas’ advice of chewing food effectively has been echoed by a recent study which has postulated that chewing 40 times instead of 15 times helps one in controlling the intake of calories. The findings of the study have been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Previously there have been many studies which have linked chewing with reduced weight. However, the results of those studies have been an amalgamation of different notions. For the recent study the researchers found a connection between the amount of chewing and levels of several hormones.
During the study it researchers associated effective chewing with lower blood levels of ghrelin. Gherline is hormone that stimulates appetite by either reducing it or increasing it. The led author of the study said that the chances of reducing weight by chewing effectively are less as there is some food like soups and milk which doesn’t requires chewing.
Although the study does have some limitations, the authors affirmed a relation between chewing and obesity. Every year, obesity in the US accounts for a spending of over $200 billion. The researchers are of the opinion that their findings will help in reducing the spending.
