Hendra virus seems to have been creating quiet a buzz. The poor dog, Dusty, who happened to be a carrier of the disease had to meet its end after the proofs were received that he did have the infection. He was killed so that the disease does not communicate any further through him.
The family that owned the dog decided that he should be surrendered to the authorities before there would be any further fuss about the same. They were cooperative in the entire operation.
The family has received offer for help and support from the world over. Many dog lovers across the vicinity are displaying their support and condolences for the family on their loss.
The family had to lose their dog after it was discovered that he was the first ever carrier of his kind of the hendra virus. Now the medical fraternity as taken deeper notes of the matter and there are tests being run on other animals as well to find out whether they are the possible carriers of the disease.
"Now domesticated species other than horses that are known to be susceptible to Hendra virus in experimental studies, and that have been risk assessed as having had close contact with a Hendra virus positive horse, must be sampled and tested for Hendra virus infection”, Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Rick Symons said.
