Obesity Leading Cause Behind Cancer, Says Study

ObesityWhile responding a recently released report the Deputy Head of Science Deputy Head of Science for World Cancer Research Fund, Dr. Rachel Thompson, claimed that women in the UK are more likely to be over weighted and to consume more alcohol as compared to other European countries.

“They are not the only reasons for the differing cancer rates, but there is now very strong evidence that women who drink a lot of alcohol are at increased risk of developing the disease and that excess body fat is also an important risk factor”, added Dr. Rachel Thompson. “This is why one of the big public health challenges we face today is to reduce the amount of alcohol we drink as a nation and to get a grip on the obesity crisis before it spirals out of control”.

Women in Britain have a 17% greater chance of getting the disease by the age of 75 and they are more likely to die from it, 13%, added the WCRF report. In addition, the WCRF has anticipated that up to up to 80,000 cases of cancer could be prevented each year if people start to practice healthy lifestyle including exercise, healthy diet and lower alcohol consumption.

Further, it suggested obesity accounts for 33% cases of cancer of the esophagus, 19% pancreatic cancers, 21% gallbladder cases and 16% breast cancer cases.
