Obese People Tends to Regain Weight: Professor Proietto

Professor ProiettoObese people have the tendency to regain the weight after shedding kilos. After the weight loss the mutation in the energy expenditure and hunger-controlling hormones support in regaining weight, stated Joseph Proietto, Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne.

Proietto notified that, however, many studies have claimed that obese people, who make the effort, can achieve and maintain the weight loss for few years but this significant change has no effect in the longer term.

He stated that obesity has been linked to high-calorie foods and no exercise but it does not apply to everyone, as sometimes genetic changes caused by environmental factors results in obesity. The physiological adaptations have been an obstruction in maintaining weight loss.

“The battle against obesity should focus on stopping children from becoming obese in the first place and making bariatric surgery more widely available as it was nearly impossible for obese people to lose weight any other way”, he stated.

He added that health authorities have been neglecting the biological reasons for obesity and have been focusing on unhealthy lifestyle. Bariatric surgery has been quite beneficial in achieving long-term weight loss.
