The Elton John AIDS Foundation succeeded to raise more than $225 million to support HIV prevention program, as an attempt to eliminate the stigma of the disease and offering direct care for those who need it.
Further, the foundation also succeeded to grab huge attention for funding more than 1,100 similar projects, across the globe, with grants in excess of €40m. The singer credited to be the first superstar who made best possible use of his stardom and status to raise the money and contributed to reduce the HIV spread.
Consequently, the outlined needle exchange program involves heroin addicts bringing used dirty needles to pharmacies in exchange of a pack with clean needles. The needle package contains structures needed for injection as therefore expected to minimize the risk of increasing infection among the addicts.
On the other hand, sources have reported that only a few pharmacies have expressed enthusiasm to take part in the move.
"The number of dollars raised for our cause, firstly”, notified John to The Hollywood Reporter. "And second, the people who attend the event -- not just the number but the contacts that are made, the relationships that are established and reinforced, the conversations that are started, the projects that are conceived and the messages that are sent and received”.
