Statins have been quite helpful to young people as it has been capable of reducing the risk of second stroke, claimed the study published in the journal Neurology.
The Finnish researchers examined 215 people who suffered strokes between the ages of 15 and 49. The reason behind their stroke was not clear and all the cases notified that the stroke occurred was due to the blockage of blood vessels.
According to the researchers, statins has been beneficial in avoiding low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and the people who took this drug were less likely to suffer from heart related problems in future.
Amongst 215 people, 36 patients took statins continuously after their first stroke and surprisingly none of them experienced any second stroke. The researchers concluded that the young people taking statins were 77% less likely to suffer from another attack.
The author of the study, Dr. Jukka Putaala stated, though the study was conducted on a small number of people but still the results have been positive and the young adults who have suffered from a stroke for unknown reason should go for the treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs.
"In most ischemic-stroke patients, statins should be considered, but there remains uncertainty of the benefit of statins in certain subgroups of young patients, such as those with carotid artery dissection", he said.
