Study Moves an Inch towards Developing Hepatitis C Vaccine

Study Moves an Inch towards Developing Hepatitis C VaccineIn a breakthrough revelation, a team of researchers has developed a vaccine for hepatitis C virus, which had no cure whatsoever so far.

The team led by French researcher David Klatzmann of the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris examined the virus particles to develop the vaccine, which was later tested on animals. The team found that those injected particle though triggered an immune reaction, they were devoid of genetic material that would allow a "virus" to multiply.

"Once injected into the body, the virus-like particles have the capacity to trigger neutralising antibodies that could protect a person if they are exposed to the virus”, the researchers said in a statement.

Hepatitis C had the capacity to attack the immune system to an extent that it can cause liver failure and cancer, as per medical advisors.

If reports from the World Health Organisation are to be considered, Hepatitis C had claims some 350 000 people worldwide each year while between 130 and 170 million people are said to be suffering from its different strains.

Though the existing results, published in journal Science Translational Medicine, are satisfactory, the team is planning to conduct human trails to substantiate its findings.
