The BBC has announced the release of a revamped version of its popular on-demand catch up service, the iPlayer, on TVs and Sony’s PlayStation 3 games console.
The broadcaster said that it had worked with consumer electronics manufacturers to offer its popular on-demand catch up service on more than 300 models of television sets, set-top boxes, blu-ray disc players as well as media streaming devices.
Previously, the iPlayer service was available on television sets through web browsers on the Wii and PlayStation 3.
According to the broadcaster’s claims, the new iPlayer comes with a simplified and efficient user interface and control options that allow users to navigate the service with the help of four direction keys and the enter button that is found on most TV remote controls.
A statement issued by the BBC stated, “You can tell, just by looking at it, that this is a TV product. We have returned to the BBC’s long TV design heritage to create a visually rich user interface that delivers a high impact from the sofa.”
Search has been improved to allow users to choose certain programmes as favorite, and get recommendations for the content they might like.
The iPlayer, which was launched on Christmas in 2007, is already available on smartphones, tablets and computers.
