Experts have urged the government and the policymakers to take appropriate steps in raising awareness about the reduction in the intake of salt to avoid health problems. The government and policymakers should work together to save lives as they can set limits on the salt content in processed foods, suggested experts.
According to the researchers, "Civil society, governments, academia, and health organizations all have a part to play. Denial and procrastination will be costly in terms of both avoidable illness and expenses".
Professor Francesco Cappuccio and colleagues have reported in the British Medical Journal that the heavy intake of salts can lead to cardiovascular disease, and its reduction can help in reducing the deaths caused by heart diseases.
These researchers pointed to studies which revealed that the reduction in salt intake will result in less hospital admissions.
According to a few studies, 3 grams reduction in salt intake a day can prevent nearly 12,000 cardiovascular diseases deaths and can help in avoiding 8,000 stroke deaths every year in UK.
Prof. Cappuccio added that the personal choice of a person alone cannot be much effective until the food industries reduce the level of salt in their products.
