In a major milestone in the history, Hamilton's airport has been green signaled to extend its runways up to 3000 metres.
Confirming the news, Chief Executive Chris Doak said: "There are clear parallels to the secondary airport models developed in other parts of the world including Gold Coast, Avalon, and Stansted airport in the UK”.
With this approval, it’s believed that Hamilton's airport would be able to stand in front of other secondary airports like Australia's Gold Coast.
It’s being believed that this approval has been given as part of a "detailed master planning exercise" which stretches out to 2030, however, no time frame has been given for the completion.
It has been reported that though green flag has been given for the extension, a lot needs to be done before a final look is prepared for the project. As per Doak, the first thing in front of the management would be to look out for suitable partners in various sections to make the project a success.
Even the business model and the most important part, fund generation, are yet to be planned. The airport has confirmed that in the long term, it would include new runway lights and navigation aids to refine the system supporting the long haul wide body services.
