Cambridgeshire supports £70m scheme for super-fast broadband The cabinet of Cambridgeshire county council has approved £20 million investment scheme to ensure super-fast broadband for almost every home and business in the region.

The overall cost has been estimated at £70 million, of which £8 million will come from the government’s £ 530 million broadband pot, while £42 million from private sector investors.

The investment will provide homes and businesses with high-speed connection of 25 megabits per second.

Leader Cllr Nick Clarke said that super-fast broadband was essential, and they would not expect communities or businesses to start up devoid of electricity, roads or water.

Clarke added that the super-fast broadband more and more businesses to the area, leading to generation of new jobs.

Speaking on the topic, he said, “There is clear evidence that businesses consider reliable fast broadband as paramount in their decision to relocate.”

Meanwhile, broadband provider BT has already invested £30 million in the country's infrastructure over the last 18 months, as part of its Next Generation Broadband Project.
