Majority of Britons want to see a 20mph speed limit for motorists travelling down roads in select locations such as outside schools, but they do not favour physicals enforcement methods to limit speeds, a study revealed.
According to a fresh survey carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), 67 per cent of people would support a 20mph speed limit on roads outside schools, while 38 per cent would be in favour of limit on roads in front of parks and shops.
Forty-eight per cent of the respondents said that they would like such speed limit on roads past their houses.
IAM has supported the idea for the introduction of a 20mph speed limit in select locations.
Kevin Delaney from IAM said, "If lower speed limits are restricted to locations and times where there is an obvious need, responsible drivers… will adhere to them without the need for enforcement."
However, merely a quarter of the respondents said they would support 20mph speed limit to become the default limit in all built-up areas.
Moreover, only 21 per cent of respondents voted in favour of physical enforcement methods such as speeds humps and cameras. They showed preference for sign boards and diver compliance to enforce speed limit of 20mph.
