Since its outbreak in Auckland, there seems to be no stopover for measles, with 109 confirmed cases in Auckland, more than 120 in upper North Island and 20 cases in Waikato and also in Taupo and Northland.
The sole reason for this outbreak, as declared by the medical council is that people are not immunized and have not taken vaccination for measles. Ministry of Health immunization Manager David Wansbrough said children need to take two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine for the measles, first at the age of two and second after the gap of two years.
But as per the National Immunization Register, 90% have received the first dosage and only 75% has received second one. Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Anita Bell said "Immunization is the only protection from this potentially serious disease, and further explained “Immunization protects not only the individual, but also blocks the spread of this disease within our communities”.
Dr. Bell has announced that if a person suffers from symptoms of measles, like fever, cough, blocked nose, sore red eyes, he should immediately call their doctor or make a call at Health line on 0800 611 116.
