According to reports, Australia's quarantine authority has announced it will permit the importation of apples from the Tasman for the first time in 90 years, as Apple and Pear Australia (APA) has raised concerns over the decision.
Also, the decision was made after the review of bio-security measure in New Zealand, and the fruit growers have expressed that the move to allow New Zealand apples into Australia will lead to the local industry being exposed to ‘fire blight disease’.
The review has discovered that the risks presented by the diseases can be managed, though the Chairman of Apple and Pear Australia, John Lawrenson said, "We thoroughly condemn BA's decision. I think Biosecurity Australia has sold the industry down the river, and this is a disease that, once it gets in, it can never be eradicated from a country”.
However, Prime Minister, Julia Gillard is reported announced earlier this year that Australia would welcome the World Trade Organization ruling in favor of New Zealand.
In addition, Trade Minister, Craig Emerson warned that Australia's export trade may suffer if it did not accept the imported apples.
Moreover, agriculture Spokesperson, John Cobb intend to introduce a ‘private member's bill’ that would give Parliament the authority not to allow the import protocols if they are not seen as reasonable.
