Recent figures have revealed that young Kiwi women are at higher risk of committing suicide. The figures were revealed by the Mental Health Commission. However, one third population of Kiwi men is also at the risk of committing suicide.
The numbers of suicides in the country have been high for past several years but this year it is on its highest. Prime Minister John Key said, "Youth suicide is an issue I'm particularly interested in trying to address, and if we get a second term, I'm going to throw resources as a department, Prime Minister and Cabinet to try and resolve or at least lower the youth suicide rate in New Zealand”.
Mental health services are providing time to those people who are in need of it. Still, only 2.3% of people avail the service but in actual about 15-20% of the total population is in need of mental health services.
Child and adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Sally Merry believes that adequate funding is not provided by the government therefore the mental services are not provided to patient timely. The figures show that there is an urgent of improving mental care for children and youngsters.
