The UK Government’s climate advisers have warned that the country is vulnerable to climate change impacts, such as floods, heat waves and droughts, as the potential risks are not being considered while making decisions in areas like planning and water supplies.
The Committee on Climate Change report stated that the country was reaching the limit in coping problems like floods. According to the climate advisers, more and more urban sites are being pave over in spite of the rising risk of flooding.
The seriousness of the situation can be estimated from the Severn Trent Water’s last year announcement that it would be hard for them to meet demand in case of drought.
As per the Adopted East Midlands Regional Plan’s policy 35, the strategies of relevant public bodies must take account of the potential climate change impacts like flooding and land drainage, by demanding sustainable drainage in all new developments.
The UN Security Council recently said that climate change could be a threat to international peace and security.
The Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) said that 11 of the 12 years from 1995 to 2006 were among the twelve warmest years since 1850.
