Diabetes UK stated that in almost half a million people diabetes remain undiagnosed. Recent research of the charity established the fact that people could not recognize symptoms of diabetes.

A survey conducted by Diabetes UK on people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last year found that 56 per cent people did not expect that they could suffer from diabetes. Maximum number of cases was diagnosed accidentally while undergoing routine medical tests. Only 16 per cent people asked for a diabetes test and were diagnosed with it.

Serious complications erupt if Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed late. These complications include kidney disease, stroke, heart disease, blindness and amputation.

Douglas Smallwood, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said, "We need to make sure that people are aware of the risk factors and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes and we need to encourage them to ask for a diabetes test if they are at risk of developing the condition."

Smallwood while stating government's health screens effective for many said this would help identifying the condition for people aged 40 to 74. The charity for boosting awareness is running workshops.
