A recent study by uSwitch. com revealed that Cranbrook in Kent offers the worst broadband speeds in the UK, around five times slower than the national average speed of 7.5Mbps.
According to the study, people in Cranbrook are receiving broadband speeds of merely 1.32Mbps, fourteen times slower than the speeds being offered by the fastest town in the UK- Leamington Spa.
Leamington Spa in Warwickshire offers average broadband (download) speeds of 18.87Mbps. In other words, broadband in Cranbrook takes 45 minutes to download a music file and as many as 12 hours to download a film.
Tregaron in Wales was found to be the next worst place to offer broadband, with an average speed of merely 1.48Mbps; while Lavant in Sussex was found to be the thirst worst place for broadband, with an average download speed of 1.65Mbps.
King’s Lynn in Norwitch and Lampeter were also named among 20 worst places for broadband speeds in the country.
Figures were compiled after conducting around 400,000 speed tests between May and July 2011.
However, areas like Kent and Sussex could be set for a speed boost as the government has recently allocated £295 million to fund fibre rollouts across England, with Kent getting £9.8 million and Sussex to get £16.9 million, respectively.
