Authorities Confirm Most Recent Hendra Case at the Gold Coast

Authorities Confirm Most Recent Hendra Case at the Gold CoastThis year, experts have confirmed Hendra virus cases in nine locations of Queensland, including Beaudesert, Mount Alford, Park Ridge, Kuranda, Hervey Bay, Boondall, Logan, Chinchilla and most recently the Gold Coast. The virus is believed to spread from flying foxes to horses and attacked around seven properties in New South Wales. The increased virus spread has also witnessed the first ever case of Hendra in a dog.

While briefing the most recent case where a horse has been tested positive for Hendra , the Queensland Health Chief Health officer, Jeannette Young, notified low risk of infection consequent to initial inquiries indicating two people, the horse's owner and a veterinarian, have been exposed to the virus.

"The vet used PPE [personal protective equipment] as soon as he suspected it could be Hendra, and so we're not concerned there's any degree of risk there”, added Jeannette Young.

The tests were performed at a Brisbane laboratory last night and confirmed that the horse had contracted Hendra.

The Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer, Rick Symons, had applauded the owner as well as veterinarian for their handling of the case. Further, he notified that five Queensland properties, including the hinterland stud farm were under quarantine.
