FDA to Tighten Regulations for Tanning Beds

FDARegulations and laws governing the use of tanning beds by the US Food and Drug Administration are nothing new, but with more and more youngsters choosing to go the sunbed way, the organization is all set to meet in March to discuss whether existing policies should be tightened or not.

Dr. Emilia Ploplys, a plastic surgeon at the Great Falls Clinic, while talking about the popularity of tanning beds, said, “a nice, healthy glow is always something that people think looks good".

The World Health Organization had last year taken tanning beds off the list of "probable" reasons, and shifted them to the category of definite cancer causers.

The FDA is now following the lead provided by the WHO.

“Tanning bed exposure increases the amount of UV radiation, which is a proven carcinogen. With people exposed to a tanning bed, they have about a 75% increased chance of melanoma", says Dr. Ploplys.

As of now, sunbeds feature warnings labels, and it is essential for users to use eyewear for proper protection. But the FDA, however, is not so sure that this is enough to get the message across.

But sunbeds also have their set of supporters who argue that their use is actually good and beneficial. In such a scenario, introducing stricter laws might not be an easy thing for the health regulators.
