With a major new project for testing the genetics of tumours of 9,000 newly-diagnosed cancer patients to be launched in the coming weeks, Cancer Research UK CEO, Harpal Kumar, has hailed the program as the dawn of a "golden era" in cancer research and treatment!
In the opinion of most of the experts in the field, the project of genetically testing the tumors is an ambitious new effort, which is essentially aimed at matching each patient with the best available drug for the specific type of cancer they may be suffering from.
According to a report in The Guardian, the program is scheduled to begin at seven hospitals next month; and underscores the potential for revolutionizing cancer treatments as well as 'exponentially' advancing human understanding of the disease.
Stating that the exponential growth in cancer knowledge will bring about a notable change in the way the disease is treated, Kumar reiterated the belief of the investigators that the project will go a long way in speeding up the development of new, more carefully-targeted cancer drugs.
Harpal Kumar told the Guardian that there has been "an explosion in our understanding of what cancer is, why it happens, why it doesn't happen in some people and why it moves around the body."
Noting that it will not be an exaggeration to say that carefully-targeted cancer drugs mark "the future of treatment," Kumar stated: "This is the future of medicine. This will not just be true in cancer but across medicine more generally"!
