Guatemalan Case: A Dark Chapter in US History

A Dark Chapter in US HistoryIf researchers of US are blamed for intentionally infecting the prisoners of Guatemalan with the sexually transmitting disease then who would trust rest of the research fraternity.

The matter dates back to late 1940's when researchers injected infected syringes for prisoner and mental patients to infect them with STD. The syringes were used to take the blood from sex workers and then they were intentionally injected to those people. For the study, almost 5500 prisoners, psychological ill patients were enrolled in which almost 1300 were made exposed to STD diseases like syphilis and gonorrhea.

The matter was taken up by the Presidential Commission, and they did an investigation in this case. They found the study unethical and standing on immoral grounds.

The Presidential Commission affirmed that researchers remained in-human and they did not think once about those innocent people. They further affirmed that the researchers were so engrossed to prove that penicillin is an effective way to treat STD that they forgot their profession ethics.

Naming it to be a stain in their history, Amy Gutmann Chairperson of the Pennsylvania University said they owe a lot to Guatemalan people, who have suffered a lot.
