57 New Trains for Auckland: Steven Joyce

 Steven JoyceTransport Minister Steven Joyce notified today that a recent agreement between the government and Auckland council will introduce 57 trains to the natives, most probably within two years. The agreement is believed to be part of government upgrade worth’s around $1.6 billion.

According to the deal, the Auckland Council will avail a $500 million Crown loan to buy electric trains, and around to $90 million Crown grant to help the funding of additional trains.

In addition, the minister has notified that the move will play a role to save the operational costs, to a noticeable level, and also to minimize the existing operational shortage of roughly $30 to 40 million per annum.

While commenting on the announcement, Auckland Mayor Len Brown stressed on need of a better transport system that can meet the international standards and said: "This agreement will mean greater rail accessibility for Aucklanders in all parts of the city, and secures trains that are modern, better for the environment, fast and quiet”.

Further, the recently launched depot will be owned by the Auckland Transport and directed to pay an access charge to the Kiwi Rail. Kiwi Rail will be liable for retaining the ownership of the track, signals as well as power supply.
