An initiative has been taken to train Otago University students pursuing medical, as to how to treat patients in the rural hospitals or areas. It has been found that the when medical students are trained in the rural areas they prefer to work in the rural area only.
It has been informed that each year, a group of 56 students which will include dentists, nurses, physiotherapy will practice at Gisborne Hospital. The scheme is hoped to be in the best interest of the students as they will experience what they will learn in classrooms.
For the scheme, the government will invest an amount of $4.5 million for three years beginning 2012. It has been revealed that a similar program has been initiated by Auckland University and Whakatane Hospital. The Auckland University is one step ahead from Otago University as they are already giving the undergraduate students an opportunity to practice while learning.
The scheme won't only help students in learning, but will also make them understand the environment where they will be required to work. Moreover, the scheme will also be beneficial for the patients of rural areas, as lack of doctors in rural hospitals has for long been an issue.
