Ford’s MyKey technology to limit speed for teenagers

FordWith a sincere intention to ensure safer driving for teenagers, Ford will fit its new cars with an electronic system that will allow parents to limit a car's top speed for their children.

The new system, called Ford MyKey, restrict speed at the behest of its owner. The system allows parents to issue their children with specifically programmed keys. It works through a second key that is the only one given to a young driver.

The driver will hear a sound and a warning to slow down after the vehicle reaches a set speed.

Ford researcher Paul Mascarena said the system would ensure peace of mind for parents, and more access to the vehicle for children.

Speaking on the new system, Mr. Mascarena added, “We were concerned children would see it as Big Brother watching them, but they get more access to the vehicle. It is targeted at young drivers, although it is useful for fleet operators.”

The Ford cars fitted with the new system will be made available across Europe from next year. The technology is already available in America, and the carmaker claims that it found no teenager complained about the system so far.
