Isle of Man organised a relay at the National Sports Centre in Douglas on August 27. The 24-hour walk was commenced in order to support cancer research in UK.
The event was organised by Celton Manx was attended by 400 people, who were divided into 29 teams. The Executive director Bill Mummery appreciated the enthusiasm of the participants. The total amount collected from the event amounted to £21,500. And the organizing team hopes to raise more money in the next event.
As per Mr. Mummery, "In the first Relay for Life last year, more than £44,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK and all of the money raised here will be donated to research centres in Liverpool where the majority of Manx cancer sufferers are cared for".
Another Relay for Life, to be held at Bellingen on October 15 and 16, was already busy with the registration formalities. The team leaders of the Relay for Life will be declared tomorrow and will be presented with a teddy bear.
As per Fiona Foulkes, Relay For Life Co-Ordinator, "Approximately 100 people in the Bellingen Shire are diagnosed with cancer every year. For this reason we need people in the community to help Cancer Council raise funds for research, support services and information booklets".
