As 2009 came to a close, Ashburton set a new record, but not at something that can be celebrated. The number of registered unemployed in the area rose to hit a seven-year high.
As the past year ended, the number of people on the job seekers list had hit 211, which is thrice more than the number of registered people who had been out of their jobs and looking for work at the end of 2008. A mere 59 people were receiving unemployment benefits back then.
As 2009 began, the number of unemployed people in the region started to edge up steadily, and hit 194 by the end of September, as compared to the figure of 54 for 2008's September.
Overall, out of the registered 211 people out of work, 66.4% were men and 85% had been on unemployment benefits for under a year.
The figures were officially released by the Ministry of Social Development, and have hurt the hopes of a rapid economic recovery, while also painting a glum picture for people who are currently employed.
"Many employers also tend to not hire over the Christmas period, shutting down for the break, which further tightens the labour market", said Social Development and Employment Minister Paula Bennett.
