A treatment, approved by the Food and Drug Administration six years ago, has become a subject of criticism. However, during its trial the drug failed to pass the required tests.
It has been informed that the treatment was invented to avoid brain strokes by improving blood flow and reducing high blood pressure. However, trials found that instead of reducing the chances of brain stroke, the device or treatment increased the chances of one getting stroke.
However, it has been recommended that the use of cardiovascular drugs is more effective in avoiding brain stroke as compared to the deploying a stent. The researchers have found that those who are provided with stent are at
20% higher risk of getting brain stroke.
The findings of the study have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The device which has become a subject of controversy works is a self-expanding device for obstructed arteries in the brain. The device is called Wingspan, and at present, it is being promoted by a unit of Stryker Corp. It has come to light that the device was approved by the FDA on the humanitarian basis and not on the medical basis.
