Netflix works on roughly 80% of all Android-based devices Netflix app now works on roughly 80 per cent of all Android-based devices, thanks to latest update that brought the popular app to all Android 2.2 (Froyo) or Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) devices.

In May this year, when the Netflix app was launched on the Android Market, it was available only for five devices.

A few months later, it started supporting nine devices. With the release of version 1.3 in July, the number of device for which it was available jumped to 24.

With the newest Netflix 1.4, the streaming service is now available for all Froyo and Gingerbread-based smartphones, but a large number of tablets are still out of its reach.

The update doesn't bring universal support for Netflix app to tablets based on the latest version of Google's operating system. Only two Honeycomb tablets are supporting Netflix, viz. the IdeaPad and Lenovo's ThinkPad tablet.

According to Google, around 15 per cent of smartphone are still running on Android 2.1 or lower. However, the figure has been shrinking fast for the past six months.

Netflix fans will have fork out a minimum of $7.99 a month to enjoy mobile device streaming.
