Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest manufacturer of PCs, on Monday unveiled a digital music service across ten key European markets together with UK, with an aim to benefit from consumers' rising demand for latest types of music download services.
The digital music service, MusicStation, will be available in the U. K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Belgium and Austria.
A monthly subscription in the U. K. is priced at GBP8.99, and EUR9.99 in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Spain. In Switzerland and Sweden, it will cost CHF14.95 and 99SEK, respectively.
The service has been developed, and is controlled, by British digital music firm Omnifone. HP runs a service similar to this in United States with RealNetworks' Rhapsody.
However, it will include endless downloads to personal computers, along with 10 favourite tracks to keep forever in digital rights management-free MP3 format, Omnifone revealed in a statement. In addition, the users can enjoy a 14-day free trial service.
The company witnessed a fall of around 10 percent in its 2009 sales as unchecked unauthenticated downloading continued to eat into legitimate digital and physical sales, according to IFPI. It estimates that around 95 percent of the music downloaded in 2009 was illegal.
