Waihi residents have been expecting reimbursement from the Newmont Gold due to the concerns over the extension of goldmining work below their town.
A meeting was held on Friday where the MP of Green Party who has been opposing the mining project addressed nearly 80 residents and all the people present in the meeting discussed about the latest issue.
According to the sources, nearly 50 homes of the town will be affected by the expansion plans of the Newmont mining that will be done towards the eastern part.
Ms. Delahunty stated that the mine would have adverse effect on the houses situated in the nearby areas and could prove to be a little dangerous, as they would be experiencing vibration in the areas. She said that those residents would require a guarantee for the insurance.
The residents of the area are concerned as Newmont has not responded to the raising concerns over their expansion plan.
Many people at the meeting were concerned about the Earthquake Commission's move after the announcement of the expansion of mine, as they are curious to know about the subsidence of the area.
Meanwhile, Newmont has notified that with the use of modern technology major environmental problem will not occur, also this project would provide addition employment opportunities for the town.
