With the number of fatal cases of bowel cancer apparently varying across the UK, Internet users can now have a clear idea about how their region fares --- thanks to an interactive map that has recently been released by the Beating Bowel Cancer charity!
The interactive map gives a postcode breakdown of bowel cancer deaths in different areas. As such, according to the charity's CEO Mark Flannagan, the information can offer people a life-saving opportunity to be aware of bowel cancer symptoms, and encourage them to participate in bowel cancer screening when it is offered to them.
Going by the details shared by the charity, Glasgow - with nearly 31 bowel cancer deaths per 100,000 people every year - is the worst area in the UK in so far as bowel cancer deaths are concerned; while Rossendale, Lancashire, is the best area, with only nine deaths per the same number of people.
Terming the regional figures pertaining to bowel cancer deaths as "intriguing," Flannagan said that the main reasons for the discrepancy chiefly include low uptake of screening as well as a lack of awareness of symptoms.
Noting that "too many people are dying from bowel cancer, no matter where they live," Flannagan further added: "Deaths from bowel cancer could, and should, be much less common. Early diagnosis is key so today we are calling on people to take responsibility for their bowel cancer risk"!
