Nearly three quarters of Brits use social media sites

Social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are regularly used by nearly three quarters of Brits to interact with friends and others, a new study by InSites Consulting revealed.

According to marketing research outfit InSites, as many as 37 million Brits (73%), with access to Internet, use Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites regularly.

The study also revealed that the most popular social media site is Facebook, with 64% of respondents admitted that they use it.

With 24% of respondents admitting using Twitter, which allows users to send and receive messages in up to 140 characters, the micro-blogging site emerged as the second most popular site.

Social media site LinkedIn grabbed the third spot with 21% saturation.

Professor Steven Van Belleghem of InSites said that everyone- young, older, employed or unemployed- uses social media sites.

Speaking on the findings, Van Belleghem said, “These numbers show that social network sites have penetrated all layers of society. An analysis of the users shows everyone is there: young, older, employed or unemployed.”

Despite the striking figures, usage of social networking sites by Brits is faintly lower than the European average of 74%.
