Uterine Stem Cells Could Give New Treatment for Diabetes, Say Researchers

Uterine-Stem-CellsWe could soon hear about a new treatment for diabetes, as scientists from the Yale School of Medicine have recently tested some new techniques over mice to treat diabetes in them and it also seems that they were succeeded in their practices.

The researchers actually tried to treat diabetes in mice for which, they transformed cells from the lining in the mouse’s uterus to cells that produce insulin in their body.

Above action follows a theory from researchers which say that the uterine lining is actually the origin of adult stem cells, which produce uterine tissue each month during the course of the menstrual phase. Thus, with the help of these stem cells, the researchers can undergo division to generate other types of cells like creating insulin-producing islet cells that exist in the pancreas in a body.

The newly produced cells can then be used by researchers for the progress of islet cell transplantation, thereby making it a big part of the possible diabetes treatment.

“Endometrial stem cells might prove most useful for Type 1 diabetes, in which the immune system destroys the body’s own insulin-producing cells. As a result, insulin is not available to control blood glucose levels”, commented Yale Professor Hugh S. Taylor, M. D.
