Medicare fraud penalized the 49-year-old convict a 50-year-long imprisonment by a federal judge. Perhaps the longest one in the available records so far.
The owner of Miami-based American Therapeutic Corp, Lawrence Duran was reported to have been detained last October after it was found that he had a vital role in staging a $205 million Medicare fraud scheme.
The accused was found to be guilty of serious charges, and was told to have taken into help from officials from the Congress and other major players in the industry.
Despite incessant pleas by Duran's lawyer, Lawrence Metsch, to reduce the sentence to around 20 years, the federal judge didn't oblige and make it a 50-year prison sentence.
It was believed that the sentence has set a precedent in front of others who follow such spurious means in their favor, and if the case hails from South Florida, the nation's capital of Medicare corruption, then it becomes highly imperative.
However, Justice Department attorney Jennifer Saulino remained firm on his stance that Duran has befooled not only patients but has cheated on the government's healthcare program.
A visibly dejected Duran was seen leaving the court with his family saying the sentence is unfair.
